Almost 210 Million Numbers Now on the Do Not Call Registry

December 8th, 2011

According to the FTC’s Do Not Call Registry Data Book for Fiscal Year 2011, over 8 million new phone numbers were added last year so that over 209 million U.S. numbers are now registered with the service, which has been active since 2003.  States with the highest number of active registrants (per 100,000 population) include: New Hampshire, Colorado, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Delaware.

Consumers filed over 630,000 complaints in 2011, mostly regarding recorded messages or robocalls (largely illegal since 2009), and requests to stop particular telemarketers from calling.  Residents of California, Florida, Texas, Illinois, and New York lodged the highest number of complaints with the registry.
