2015: A false advertising class-action lawsuit was filed against Ambit Energy for allegedly using a pyramid scheme to defraud consumers by, among other things, promising free energy and other perks to its consultants who sign-up new customers. The complaint also alleges that Ambit’s marketing materials offer customers who switch to Ambit “low, competitive rates” and “consistent rates” without telling them that the company’s rates fluctuate and can spike any time resulting in higher monthly energy bills for customers. (Kostovetsky et al v. Ambit Energy Holdings, LLC et al, Case No. 15-cv-2553, N.D. Ill.)
