Authority Tax Services

Here’s a radio ad we heard for Authority Tax Services:

The very beginning of the ad states:

Attention tax payers: If you owe $10,000 or more to the IRS, it’s a fact that they have the power to take everything you own, including your home, business and even your freedom.

That “fact” is probably closer to a stretching of the truth meant to scare you than a clean-cut fact. It is a fact that if you fail to pay your taxes, the IRS can take action against you. If you owe $10,000 or more, the IRS will generally file a Notice of Federal Tax Lien, which can damage your credit and make it difficult to sell your house or business. And if you continue to avoid paying your tax debts, the IRS can eventually seize and sell your property to satisfy the debt.

But just owing $10,000 or more to the IRS does not automatically allow the IRS to take all your stuff and throw you in jail. They can eventually, after plenty of warning and chances to work out a payment plan, but we’re not sure this ad is presenting a fact as much as a scare tactic that tries to get you to pay for their tax service.

The IRS has a number of free services available to those who owe taxes. Think about all your options before paying a tax relief company money that might be better served going directly into repaying debts.
