Coppertone Ultra Guard Sunscreens

December 2018: This action was transferred to federal court. (Case No. 18-cv-2631, C. D. CA.)

September 2018: A class-action lawsuit was filed against Bayer Healthcare for, among other things, deceptively advertising Coppertone Ultra Guard Sunscreens. Plaintiffs claim that the company:

  • Deceptively advertises that the sunscreen provides “Broad Spectrum SPF 50 Protection from the Most Damaging UVA/UVB Ray[s]” when, according to plaintiffs, the sunscreen does not provide protection from UVB rays and the protection against UVA rays is “significantly overrated;”
  • The company deceptively hides a majority of the active ingredients in the sunscreens; and
  • The company fails to disclose that the chemical formula in the sunscreen degrades rapidly after being exposed to the sun.
