The Department of Interior (DOI), established in 1849, is the federal department responsible for protecting the country’s natural resources and cultural heritage. The DOI oversees a number of bureaus, including the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the Bureau of Land Management, the National Parks Service, and the Fish and Wildlife Service.

Under the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the Indian Arts and Crafts Board (IACB) promotes the interests of Native American artists, craftspeople, and cultural organizations.  One of the main concerns of the IACB is enforcing the Indian Arts and Crafts Act of 1990, which makes it illegal to falsely claim any product or work of art as Indian-made that is not. The IACB investigates reports of such claims and subjects offenders to criminal and civil penalties.

If you spot any shady claims about Indian artwork that you think violates the Act, let the IACB know.
