Bold statements abound on the Nature Works Best Cancer Clinic website, including:

  • “Most cancer patients who complete our treatment go into remission” (featured prominently in a slider on the homepage)
  • “Our (intravenous nutrient) treatments have proved to be an effective alternative to traditional chemotherapy and radiation”
  • “Best documented success rates in the world”

But when The National Advertising Division (NAD) is the advertising industry’s self-regulatory body administered by the Council of Better Business Bureaus. requested that Nature Works Best Cancer Clinic substantiate these claims, the Tempe, Ariz.-based clinic declined to deliver any scientific evidence, prompting NAD to refer the matter to the FTC and FDA for further review.

The Nature Works Best Cancer Clinic website contends that the clinic has developed a natural cancer treatment method based on intravenous vitamin therapy whose remission rates “far exceed” those of conventional treatments without any side effects. Or, as another challenged claim put it (parenthesis in original):

Your best opportunity to fight cancer — and this goes for all cancer patients — is to begin the natural treatments before the conventional treatments (chemo, radiation, etc.) sicken and weaken you and ultimately strengthen your cancer.

While the website points to four studies, all four were authored or co-authored by Colleen Huber, who is Nature Works Best Cancer Clinic’s own medical director.

“NAD was concerned that these claims give consumers a reason to believe that the claimed benefits have been proven by rigorous and reliable scientific study,” NAD stated.

UPDATE 9/8/17: The FTC has decided not to take action regarding the advertising claims by Nature Works Best Cancer Clinic referred to the agency by NAD. However, the clinic has removed from its homepage a “Studies” tab that had linked to the four articles authored or co-authored by Huber.
