Recording Industry Association of America

The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) is a trade organization that supports and promotes major music companies.  The RIAA’s main function is to protect the rights of artists and music labels, but it also dabbles in a little bit of self-regulation – the familiar “Parental Advisory / Explicit Content” warning labels on CD covers in record stores (and appearing on MP3 websites).  However, these labels don’t seem to really impact the way music is advertised and sold (with the possible exception of them having the perverse effect of generating more attention for the recordings to which they’re affixed…).
